Santa cruised through town the other night. Recognizing me as Tom on the Trails, he handed me a list of what a trail wants for Christmas. The trail doesn’t need underwear, regifted Trader Joe’s wine, or last year’s fruitcake. The best gifts come from your heart.
The trail needs volunteers to keep the trail alive. There is a job for everyone from mowing, weeding, blowing off debris, social media, publicity, events, office work, and much more. Be sure to thank trail volunteers on your walk, run, or bike ride.
Keep the trail clean. Start by leaving no trace behind. Carry out what you brought in. Pick up litter you encounter. Caring for the environment and nature is everyone’s job.
Smile and be courteous. Be predictable, move to the right to let others pass, and keep your pets leashed. Be a trail angel when other trail users are lost or need assistance.
The trail is a place of solitude. It is also a place to grow friendships while enjoying the outdoors. Ask a friend out on your next trail date. Make it a routine and visit the trail often.
The trail is constantly changing with the seasons. Capture the changes and share them on social media. Stopping to take a photo often reveals things unseen.
Challenge yourself to discover something new on every visit. Immersing yourself in nature is good for your mental health. It reminds you to slow down and enjoy the moment.
The trail connects communities to nature. Pick up a coffee in town before or after your walk. Visit a bike shop, antique emporium, family restaurant, or local attraction to make your trail visit complete.
Show your support for the trail as a champion. Spread the word of what can be experienced on the trail. Encourage friends to support the trail and park district to keep the trails open, safe, and welcoming. Let your pride in the community shine.
The trail posts rules to keep the trail safe, clean, and enjoyable for all. Sharing the trail by following the posted rules makes for a happy trail.
The trail needs your financial support to make all the above possible. Your gifts fund trail maintenance and improvements. Community support is an important piece of the trail budget.
Happiest holidays to all on the trail!
