Experience the holiday gifts of trails
It’s time to map out your trail adventures for the upcoming year
Adventure lies beyond our daily routines. It's about stepping outside our comfort zone and embracing the unknown.
Movies invite us to experience adventure vicariously, transporting us to exotic locations and thrilling situations through the eyes of characters like Indiana Jones or Lara Croft. They allow us to live vicariously, experiencing the thrill of danger and the allure of the unknown.
The holiday season always seems to fly by – decorations come down, traditions fade into memories, and the excitement gradually subsides. But as the year draws to a close, a sense of renewal emerges. The new year offers a fresh start, a blank slate to plan new adventures and experiences.
I don't wait for New Year's Eve to chart my course for the coming year. Amidst the holiday bustle, I find time for reflection. Years ago, I ditched resolutions, finding them more of a burden than a benefit.
Instead, I focus on the small things that bring me happiness and challenge me to live a fuller life. Living by a rigid resolution scorecard doesn't have the same results and impact on my life.
The most overlooked aspect of adventure is that it's entirely subjective. We may see ourselves as unadventurous, yet secretly yearn for excitement.
My life in the coming year always includes cycling adventures. Touring by bike brings me immense joy and presents both expected and unexpected challenges. I integrate my passion for cycling into my life, creating a cycling calendar that respects family commitments and other obligations.
Trails, gateways to adventure
Trails offer a gateway to adventure for everyone, regardless of age, ability, or available time. A simple walk or a short bike ride can lead to an adventure, a chance to step outside the comfort zone and experience something new.
Trails have a significant place in my cycling plans. I hope my writing encourages you to explore a trail. Whether you're a leisurely cyclist enjoying a 5 or 10-mile ride or a seasoned rider pushing for 50-100 miles, trails welcome all, a place for everyone.
Trails are hubs of activity, where toddlers on tricycles share the path with seasoned cyclists, and seniors enjoy leisurely rides on their e-bikes. People of all ages walk, run, skate, and bike with friends socializing outdoors.
Trails connect us to history, nature, and the communities they traverse. Whether you're a history buff, foodie, craft beer aficionado, coffee enthusiast, or outdoor enthusiast, the trail likely offers something for you. From charming small towns to bustling cities, trails wind through varied landscapes, each with a unique culture and traditions. No matter what your passion, you're sure to find something to enjoy along the way.
Ohio to Erie Trail adventures
Adventure doesn't have to break the bank. Short day trips and weekend getaways offer fun-filled opportunities for exploration. Within a two-to-four-hour drive, you can discover hidden gems and create lasting memories. The interconnectedness of today's trail networks means you can often explore for miles without ever needing to get in a car once you arrive at your destination.
As a fan of the Ohio to Erie Trail, I believe it's the perfect 2025 adventure. This 326-mile journey follows historic rail lines and canals. Only 10% are on-road, primarily through scenic Ohio Amish Country. 90% are on dedicated trails with the majority paved and the remainder crushed limestone. This makes the Ohio to Erie Trail an ideal destination for cyclists seeking a rewarding and memorable experience.
Don’t feel like tackling the entire 326 miles at once? No problem! Break your Ohio to Erie Trail adventure into shorter segments over several weekends. Explore the charming towns and cities along the way and savor the unique character of each stop.
Looking for more adventure? The Ohio to Erie Trail connects you to rivers, canals, and county, state, and national parks. Kayak, canoe, or hike your way through stunning scenery. Discover the diverse landscapes as you cross the state and create unforgettable memories.
Embrace the magic of the Ohio to Erie Trail in winter. Discover the splendor of winter revealing the hidden beauty of nature and wildlife. The season transforms the trail into a place of peace and solitude. The only sounds are the falling snow and the crunch of your footsteps or tires.
Challenge yourself in 2025
Embrace the unknown in the year ahead. Step outside your comfort zone and embark on new adventures, whether it's conquering a challenging trail or pursuing a long-held dream. The rewards of stepping into the unknown are often immeasurable.
Thirty-four years have passed since the Ohio to Erie Trail was envisioned. The visionary advocates in the 1990s recognized the trail's potential to connect people and communities across the state. They undoubtedly envisioned it as a place for outdoor adventure. Their vision is a gift to you enriching your own life of adventure.
Hey Tom, you're right, and I agree, we've got a season of exploring to plan! But when I read that headline,I thought you were taking a different turn. My knee-jerk reaction was, "yay, it's time to start shopping again!" I'm not addicted (I swear - well ummm not exactly); I just love finding unique gifts on my travels for the sweet people in my life. Quaint shops, bookstores, candy shops, art galleries, museums, and other stops always seem to hold the "perfect" item for someone who has a birthday or holiday coming up. And I get the great joy of supporting independents and sharing their gifts and recalling my adventures when I do. Win--win-win! OK...now to planning 2025!
I enjoyed reading this, Tom. Thanks for sharing your writing with us!
