How the trail transformed my life
Sharing my journey of transformation and passion this Giving Tuesday.
Nineteen years ago, I awoke in cardiac intensive care after suffering a mild heart attack. This led to triple bypass surgery and two additional procedures, which required me to be placed in a medically induced coma. I awoke to find myself a bruised, scarred, and broken person. This story is prominent in my mind as someone who changed the course of their life.
The Ohio to Erie Canal Towpath Trail became the path to transform my life. I discovered cycling and the freedom of the trails. My bike became my gateway to adventure. It led me to hiking and running. But cycling — touring by bike ignited a passion that combined exploration, challenge, and the connection to the outdoors.
In 2016, I discovered that my local trail was part of the Ohio to Erie Trail sponsoring a cross-state bike tour, which seemed the perfect way to celebrate my upcoming retirement. I accepted the challenge to explore my state on two wheels. I gained a clearer perspective on the role of trails and my bike in my retirement.
In 2018 I returned to the Ohio to Erie Trail for its annual bike tour. It was an honor to be invited to join the board of directors. I embraced the opportunity to lead the marketing team. My mission was to encourage others to experience the life-changing power of the trail.
In 2022, I was humbled to be elected president of the board of directors—a role that fills me with pride and a sense of responsibility. Serving this trail is a privilege as I continue championing its transformative impact.
The man I see in the mirror today is vastly different from the person I was in 2005. Back then, I was lost and disconnected from the outdoors. Thanks to my time on the trail, Now, I'm a fulfilled and happier man.
I believe many in our trail community can relate to this story. This time of year is an opportunity to express gratitude. If the trail has enriched your life and provided a sense of belonging, better health, and a home outdoors, please consider supporting the trail or the trail you frequent.
Many causes, including local trail organizations, seek funding this time of year to further their missions. These organizations often rely heavily on volunteers. Your financial support plays a crucial role in their success. Even if you can't volunteer, you can make a difference with your donation.
Giving Tuesday is a special day to give back to the Ohio to Erie Trail. Your donation directly impacts our work to complete the trail and ensure its future for generations to come. Every dollar counts, so please consider a donation today.

Join me on my morning trail walk, where I reflected and gathered inspiration for this story. I highlight the transformative power of trails and the sense of inclusivity they foster.
If you ride a bike, you are a cyclist. If you hike, you a hiker. If you run, you are a runner. If you are on the trail, you are the trail. I’ll leave you to think about that.
Happy trails!
