I am deaf and use a mirror on my sunglasses to see what is going on behind me in traffic. I have 8,000 outside cycling miles mostly on roads and some on trails so far this year and 95,000 miles on Strava now for last 10 or 11 years. And more than that since I been riding since the late 70's. I have done OTET 2 1/2 times now. I take my bike into stores when I buy food and drinks especially if I can't watch the bike from inside the store. If they don't like it I just go the next store.

Cycling has become your means of transportation and an integral part of your life. This is what transportation engineers need to understand. It's more than just building bike lanes and bike routes. It's working with city centers and areas where people need to go. There needs to be a priority on providing safe and secure bicycle parking just as it is the priority is for the auto. This is happening in some larger cities but many downtowns and businesses hold dear the front parking space for the auto. Things are changing. Keep on riding.
